Paper Conservation Suction Hood Workstation: Integrated Negative Pressure, Humidification & Transmitted Light for Rare Books
Engineered Containment and Controlled Micro-Environments in Paper Restoration
Fragile archival collections, brittle manuscripts, and water-damaged book bricks present distinct handling challenges. Mechanical dust removal releases mold spores and airborne particulate matter that endanger laboratory staff. Meanwhile, brittle parchment and cellulose fibers break under dry handling.
The Paper Conservation Suction Hood Workstation solves both problems by integrating a sealed acrylic enclosure, negative-pressure dust extraction, targeted humidification, and high-uniformity backlighting into a single chassis.

Sealed Acrylic Containment and Negative-Pressure Dust Extraction
Handling heavily mold-infected or fire-damaged volumes demands strict biosafety control. Dry brushing outside a containment hood disperses active spores, insect frass, and micro-particles directly into the ambient room air.
This conservation workstation features a transparent, high-impact acrylic enclosure that isolates the restoration zone from the surrounding laboratory. Activating the integrated exhaust system creates an inward negative pressure gradient. Ambient air enters smoothly through targeted intake slots while loosened dust, fungal fragments, and contaminants are drawn directly into high-efficiency filtration channels, protecting the conservator without obstructing 360-degree visibility.
Precision Humidification and Transmitted Backlighting
Brittle pages that have fused into compact book bricks require controlled rehydration before mechanical separation can occur safely. Applying wet compresses or broad liquid sprays risks localized ink bleeding and fiber warping.
The built-in humidification module introduces ultra-fine micro-mist into the sealed enclosure, raising relative humidity to controlled targets. As moisture penetrates dried-out plant fibers, paper flexibility returns naturally, allowing fused leaves to release without surface abrasion.
For fragmented sheets requiring realignment, the flush-mounted transmitted backlight panel delivers uniform, shadow-free illumination across the entire sheet. Restorers can cross-reference fiber wirelines, identify watermark boundaries, and align fractured character strokes with optical precision.
